Canadian Open: Furyk fancied at long odds

The PGA Tour makes its annual trip north of the border this week for the RBC Canadian Open at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Ontario.

And despite coming straight after the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, world number one Dustin Johnson and Open runner-up Matt Kuchar are in the field, along with home favourite Adam Hadwin and Ian Poulter.

Unsurprisingly, Johnson and Kuchar head the Canadian Open betting odds and Johnson is a 7/1 favourite despite following his third round of 64 at Birkdale with a hugely disappointing 77.

After taking a one-shot lead with five holes to play on Sunday, Kuchar played the next four holes in two under par and still went to the 18th tee two shots behind an inspired Jordan Spieth, who went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie on the same stretch after his protracted bogey on the 13th.

It would be easy to assume that playing in Britain one week and Canada the next is not ideal, but Brandt Snedeker in 2013 and Jason Day in 2015 contended in the Open before winning the Canadian Open the following week, while last year’s runners-up – Jon Rahm, Johnson and Martin Laird – had all played at Royal Troon the week before.

However, Johnson and Kuchar are simply too short on this occasion and instead the first of our Canadian Open betting tips is someone whose form in the event reads 9-2-4-13, but can be backed at 40/1.

Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk is the man in question and although he has not been in top form this season, a run of six straight missed cuts has been followed by three top-35 finishes.

Our next Canadian Open selection has also not been in brilliant form this season, although two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson has shown glimpses of the talent which make him an interesting choice at 33/1.

Watson battled to a share of 27th at Birkdale despite the unfavourable conditions at times and was sixth in the Memorial Tournament earlier this season. The left-hander was also second to Day on his last appearance in the event in 2015.

And finally, Germany’s Alex Cejka was fifth in the event last year and has two top-15 finishes in his last three starts, so he is the last of our Canadian Open betting tips at either 100/1 in the outright market or 10/1 for a top-10 finish.
