The wait for the 40th running of the Ryder Cup is so close to being over you can almost smell the mown grass, malt whiskey and haggis, neeps and tatties emanating from the Gleneagles Centenary course’s clubhouse.

We flagged up three best bets to taste success in the European top-scorer market recently (Click here) and have gone back to the chalkboard for a run down of the visitors’ most likely big hitters.

Jordan Spieth @ 10/1 (currently top price with bwin.com)

The 21-year-old is the youngest of three American rookies setting sail for Scotland, but neither Jimmy Walker nor Patrick Reed are expected to best all after their breakthrough campaigns on the PGA Tour.

USA coach Tom Watson will be hopeful of plenty of inspiration from Spieth though, after the Dallas swinger finished tied for 34th or better in the first three majors of the season, which includes getting to within three shots of Bubba Watson when sharing second at Augusta in April.

Spieth has a thoroughly decent record of five wins from eight match play contests and looks just about the value to put it up to 5/1 favourite Rickie Fowler in this market.

Bubba Watson @ 9/1

Three points out of a possible eight in two Ryder Cups is nothing in particular to boast of, but the Masters champion’s match play skills have clearly come on in recent seasons.

Watson has won four of his last six matches at the WGC Match Play Championship and five of his last six fourballs/foursomes in Presidents Cup/Ryder Cup action, so the formidable Floridian is not without a chance at Gleneagles.

Matt Kuchar @ 8/1 (currently top price with bwin.com)

The number nine-ranked player in world golf has a strong match play record of 17 wins, eight losses in singles events, and although his early-career record in team doubles was poor, Kuchar has also won five of his last six clashes in fourballs/foursomes.

Having taken the 2013 WGC tournament, which the 36-year-old finished third at two years previously, much will be expected from a player who tied for 12th or better at both the US Open and Masters during the season.
