The PGA Tour returns to Texas this week for the AT&T Byron Nelson, which is being played for the final time at TPC Four Seasons, Las Colinas before moving to Trinity Forest next year.
Four of the world’s top six have made the trip following last week’s Players Championship, with world number one Dustin Johnson, Masters champion Sergio Garcia, Texas native Jordan Spieth and Jason Day headlining the field.
Spieth missed the cut at Sawgrass for the third year running, Day could only finish 60th and Garcia was in contention until a final round of 78, meaning that Johnson’s tie for 12th was the best finish the big four could manage.
When you consider that represents Johnson’s best finish at Sawgrass in nine visits – T28th was his previous best – it is easy to see why he is a 4/1 favourite in our Byron Nelson betting tips for a fourth win in his last six starts this week.
Since 2009, the US Open champion has finished no worse than T20 at TPC Four Seasons, where he has the best scoring average of any player in that time frame (67.88) even though the par-70 layout has just two par fives.
Obviously backing 9/2 shots in full field events is not an easy way of making big money but Johnson’s form is simply too good to ignore and he is our first selection.
Garcia is the defending champion this week and was making all the right noises in his pre-tournament press conference about the need to move on from his emotional Masters triumph and fully focus on the task at hand.
The 37-year-old also won the Byron Nelson back in 2004 and makes some appeal at 12/1 but with Johnson already on side, we’ll look further afield for some bigger prices.
New Zealand’s Danny Lee won on the European Tour as an amateur and claimed his first PGA Tour title in 2015 while he finished just a shot behind Johnson in this event last year.
His recent form is not too inspiring with two missed cuts in a row but his scoring average at TPC Four Seasons is 68.61 and he makes an interesting outsider at 125/1.
Finally, DA Points can be backed in the outright betting at 200/1 or in the top 10 market at 16/1 as he looks to reproduce the form which saw him win in Puerto Rico earlier this season.
In the five events since his victory Points has missed three cuts but he was 23rd in the Shell Houston Open and 12th in the Wells Fargo Championship and is ranked 12th in greens in regulation this season.
