GolfSixes: Great Danes can be top dogs

As if picking winners of regular events is not hard enough when it comes to golf betting, the European Tour throws another spanner in the works with this weekend’s inaugural GolfSixes event at the Centurion Club.

Two-man teams from 16 different countries will compete over six holes of greensomes match play, where both players tee off on each hole, then choose the best tee shot and take alternate shots from then on.

The 16 teams have been split into groups of four, with the top two from each group advancing to the knockout stages, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place on Sunday.

Throw in loud music, pyrotechnics, long drive and nearest-the-pin contests and the tournament motto of “It’s golf…but not as you know it” seems pretty fitting.

However, once the peripheral nonsense is out of the way, good golf will still be required to walk away with the first prize of 200,000 euros for the winning team, with the English Ryder Cup duo of Chris Wood and Andy Sullivan made the 9/2 favourites.

Wood is in good form after a tie for fourth in China last week, but Sullivan – who reportedly made a hole-in-one on the first hole in practice on Thursday – has not played since a tie for 48th in the Masters last month.

And with that in mind, there are three other teams which appeal at more generous odds in the GolfSixes betting, namely Denmark, Belgium and South Africa.

Denmark are represented by Lucas Bjerregaard and the in-form Thorbjorn Olesen, who partnered Soren Kjeldsen to victory in the World Cup at Kingston Heath in 2016. Bjerregaard’s form has not been sparkling this season, but playing with his compatriot could be the boost he needs to justify GolfSixes odds of 9/1.

Belgium can boast former Ryder Cup player Nicolas Colsaerts and rising star Thomas Detry, who should have the firepower to take advantage of par fives measuring 516 and 546 yards and are available at 12/1.

And for our final GolfSixes prediction, the South Africa pair of Darren Fichardt – who won the Joburg Open earlier this season – and Brandon Stone come into the event on the back of finishing tied 18th in China last week, making odds of 16/1 pretty appealing.
