Texas Open: Hoffman can extend great course record

Charley Hoffman has had a roller-coaster campaign but we’re hoping he is back on a high in San Antonio as he heads our Texas Open betting tips.

The 40-year-old has missed the cut seven times in 15 outings but can also boast some impressive highlights and takes the eye at odds of 22/1.

Hoffman was second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, third at the Franklin Templeton Shootout and fourth at the Genesis Open, so there is no doubting his staying power when the mood is right.

However, it was his performance on the opening day of the Masters that really hit the headlines, with a 65 putting him four shots clear at the head of the leaderboard.

It all went steadily downhill from then on at Augusta but the American declared: “I had a chance and I was in it for a long time. I was leading the Masters after 40-some holes. It was a lot of fun and I know I can do it some day.”

Hoffman can be forgiven for missing the cut at the RBC Heritage last week but he should welcome a return to this course, where he claimed victory 12 months ago, was second in 2011 and third in 2013, with 13th his worst effort in the past eight renewals.

Brendan Steele also ticks plenty of boxes this week as he bids to continue a strong start to the season, which began with victory at the Safeway Open and has included two more top-six placings.

The 34-year-old has made the top 15 four times from six visits to San Antonio and warrants consideration once more at 28/1.

Completing our trio of tips is England’s Luke Donald, who put in a fine effort when runner-up at the RBC Heritage and can be backed at 40/1 to go one better this time.

The 39-year-old is not a regular at this tournament but tied for 13th last year and clearly enjoyed that experience enough to come back.
