There is a certain air of inevitability about the winner of the 2015 Open Championship, with bwin.com rating whirlwind sensation Jordan Spieth the clear 6/1 favourite to claim both his and the year’s third Major.
The Texan has provided real competition to Rory McIlroy’s hold of the world’s number one golf ranking during a sensational 2015 and, with the Northern Irishman unable to defend his Open title through injury, is seemingly unopposed in the betting at St Andrews.
However, while Spieth, who hasn’t finished above 36th in his previous two Open outings, is certainly the central figure to the tournament’s plot, there remains a better value bet, with better form underpinning it.
That punt concerns another American, Zach Johnson, and a finish inside the top 10, an eventuality priced at 8/1 by the esteemed odds makers at bwin.com.
The security surrounding that selection comes from Johnson’s recent form in the tournament, where he has finished among the leading ten golfers on the leaderboard twice in the past three years, as well as two other finishes in the top 20.
Anyone brushing such a diminutive sample size aside as unsatisfactory should also take note that Johnson’s razor-sharp iron play has ensured he has made all of the last four Open cuts.
Such consistency obviously gives the Iowa native prime opportunity to once again settle in the higher reaches of the leaderboard come Sunday evening.
Then, comes the former Masters champion’s recent form, which has seen the sunglass-wearing 39-year-old finish sixth and third respectively in his last two tournaments prior to landing in Scotland.
In fact, Johnson has recorded five top tens in his last 11 starts, one of which was at this year’s Masters, and seven in his 18 PGA Tour appearances this season.
So forget Spieth winning, it’s Johnson’s top-ten chances that are the real goldmine at St Andrews this week.
