His other two finishes in the event were tied for 64th, back in 2011, and a share of eighth 12 months ago, so this is clearly one of McIlroy’s seasonal highlights.
After taking the WGC-Bridgestone invitational by two strokes last time out, the County Down swinger couldn’t be a worthier favourite.

This powerful Spaniard is fast becoming the new Colin Montgomery, having yet failed to land one of golf’s four main events despite finishing tied for fifth or better no fewer than ten times since bursting onto the scene with an Irish Open win in 1999.
Garcia has finished second twice and third once in the US PGA, chased home McIlroy at Hoylake last month and came closest to toppling the on-fire world number one at Firestone over the weekend, posting a 72-hole score of -13 to the winner’s -15.
The 34-year-old certainly has the game to take this, so 14/1 about in-form Garcia finally breaking his Major duck rates a fine bet.
Rickie Fowler @ 22/1
Only 20/1 Tiger Woods is a shorter price than Fowler of the home challengers at Valhalla, and the 14-time Major winner may not even play after quitting the WGC event mid-play over the weekend, ostensibly due to his bad back flaring up.
At a couple of points more, the Oklahoma State University alumnus rates a far, far better option than Woods to take this.
Fowler has been the most consistent Major performer in the world this year, coming in tied for second at the US and British Opens and grabbing a share of fifth at the Masters in April.
The 25-year-old banked a top-ten finish on -7 at the WGC in his only start since, and it’s surely only a matter of time before he takes one of the top prizes, so don’t miss out.
